Snowshoes

Snowshoes Bring the Best Adventures

Snowshoeing is a great way to enjoy the beautiful snow-covered areas during the wintertime. The footwear allows your weight to spread over a large surface area to stop you sinking deeply into the snow. This makes it possible to access places that would otherwise be very difficult with regular hiking boots. Open fields, rolling hills or steep slopes are all possible with the right pair of snowshoes. As well as exploring nature, you get a great fitness workout that is very inexpensive and hassle-free.

What are Snowshoes?

Snowshoes are basically platforms for your feet to increase the surface area you step on to minimize the sinking into the snow. The modern snowshoes have come a long way from the days when they were made with wooden frames and rawhide lacing. Snowshoes are now lighter, stronger and have features such as crampons (metal teeth) for hiking on icy snow and adjustable fitting bindings that keep your feet secure. So hang your traditional snowshoes above the fireplace and check out our modern selection.

What Snowshoes Should I Buy?

Your snowshoes should match your weight, snow conditions and terrain steepness you will hike in. Each model of snowshoe will state a recommended max load (weight), which you should not exceed. The "load" includes your weight as well as all the clothing, shoes and gear that you will have with you when out snowshoeing.

The snow conditions can help you decide if you are stuck between 2 or more models. If you will be snowshoeing in deep powder, pairs with a larger surface area will perform better, as they will “float” on the surface easier than something smaller. For steep terrain areas, features such as heel lifts and long toe and heel crampons are great for climbing, but these are only found on specific mountaineering snowshoe models.

Remember, there is no bad weather, just an incomplete wardrobe. Dress appropriately for the weather conditions outside. Check the weather forecast, put on your comfiest pair of winter boots and wear appropriate layers. It’s a good idea to carry a backpack that can hold an extra layer along with some other essentials such as sun cream, water, snacks and a first aid kit. Are you missing out right now? Then head over to our Winter Wear Category.

Another sport that shares many of the same paths as snowshoeing is cross country skiing. If you are interested in finding out more about this, then check out Cross Country Skis & Cross Country Skiing Equipment.
